Chinese Spokesperson Urges U.S. to End Discriminatory Measures on Chinese Students

This week, in a strong statement emphasizing the importance of educational exchange, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged the U.S. to refrain from imposing discriminatory measures on Chinese students at American universities.

Recent media reports revealed that a U.S. House politician sent letters to six U.S. universities requesting detailed information on Chinese students on grounds of national security. However, Mao Ning stressed that such actions stretch the concept of national security and risk undermining academic freedom.

Mao highlighted that Chinese students account for roughly one-quarter of the international student community in the U.S., contributing significantly to scientific research, technological innovation, and cultural exchange. He noted that protecting the rights and interests of these students not only supports individual academic pursuits but also fosters stronger bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding between nations.

Educational cooperation is a key driver of economic growth and technological advancement. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's call is a reminder that balancing security concerns with open academic exchange is essential in today’s globally connected landscape.
