EU Leaders Commit to Defense Boost and Solidarity with Ukraine

In a show of unwavering support, European Union leaders on Thursday pledged to stand by Ukraine and increase defense spending amid a rapidly changing global landscape.

At a summit in Brussels, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized Europe’s resilience, stating, "Europe must take up this challenge, this arms race. And it must win it." He further asserted, "Europe as a whole is truly capable of winning any military, financial, economic confrontation with Russia – we are simply stronger."

The European Commission has introduced proposals granting fiscal flexibility on defense budgets, allowing member states to jointly borrow up to $160 billion. This fund is intended to support EU governments in bolstering their militaries.

Antonio Costa, the chairman of the meeting, along with European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen, warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signaling a stark contrast to the recent clash between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. Costa affirmed, "We are here to defend Ukraine," underscoring the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

These developments mark a significant shift in European defense policy, highlighting the EU’s role in global stability and its readiness to support allies in times of need.
