Judge Approves Trump’s Federal Employee Buyout Program

A U.S. federal judge has cleared the way for former President Donald Trump's administration to proceed with a controversial buyout program for government employees, potentially removing tens of thousands of workers from federal payrolls. The ruling, issued by Judge George O'Toole in Boston, marks a significant step in Trump's broader push to reduce the size of the U.S. civil service.

What's at Stake?

The program, now closed to new applicants, offered federal employees their salaries and benefits through October without requiring work. However, unions argue the deal lacks guarantees, as funding for salaries beyond March 14 remains uncertain. Approximately 65,000 employees—3% of the civilian workforce—had enrolled before the closure.

Pushback and Legal Battles

Labor unions, including the American Federation of Government Employees, criticized the ruling as a \"setback\" for public servants. They allege the plan violates federal spending laws and fear it could lead to mass layoffs. Despite the legal challenge being dismissed due to lack of standing, unions are exploring further action, including a separate lawsuit against potential \"mass firings.\"

Budget Cuts and Musk's Role

Trump’s efficiency drive includes a partnership with Elon Musk, tasked with slashing $1 trillion from the federal budget. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has already targeted 15 agencies, dismantling two. Critics argue the cuts prioritize ideology over fiscal responsibility, particularly as retirement and health benefits—36% of federal spending—remain untouched.

The administration describes the buyout as a \"humane off-ramp\" amid broader workforce reductions. However, debates over fiscal priorities continue, with Republican lawmakers proposing budget plans that could expand debt despite austerity measures.
