S. Korea’s Yoon Faces Seventh Impeachment Hearing Over Martial Law Controversy

South Korea’s constitutional court held its seventh impeachment hearing for President Yoon Suk-yeol on Tuesday, with the embattled leader defending his controversial martial law declaration during a session marked by conflicting testimonies from military officials.

Courtroom Drama Unfolds

Yoon arrived at the Seoul courtroom wearing his signature red necktie, reiterating that his December 2023 emergency order – which saw military helicopters land at the National Assembly and special forces storm the building – was a constitutional response to a “national emergency.” Opposition lawmakers argue no such crisis existed.

Contradictions in Command

While Yoon claims to have ordered troop withdrawals, former Army Special Warfare Command chief Kwak Jong-keun testified that no such commands were received. Footage from the night shows armed soldiers clashing with citizens, though Colonel Kim Hyun-tae insisted troops “only defended” themselves.

Media Blackout Allegations

Former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min denied prosecutors’ claims that Yoon ordered utilities cut to progressive media outlets. This contradiction adds fuel to claims of executive overreach as the court prepares for Thursday’s final hearing.

Historic Precedent at Stake

Yoon, South Korea’s first sitting president to be arrested and tried while in office, faces charges of insurrection conspiracy. The impeachment motion suspends his presidential powers until the court’s ruling, expected within 180 days of its December 14 filing.
