UN Chief Calls on US to Exempt Critical Aid from Assistance Freeze

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the United States to exclude critical aid deliveries from its recent order to pause foreign assistance, as reported by his spokesman on Monday.

Guterres expressed concern over the US decision, emphasizing the importance of continued support for vulnerable communities worldwide who rely on such aid for their livelihoods and well-being.

The UN chief urged further exemptions to ensure that essential development and humanitarian aid remains uninterrupted, highlighting the significant role the US plays as one of the largest aid providers globally.

Additionally, Guterres conveyed his readiness to engage with the new US administration to collaboratively shape a strategic path forward in delivering much-needed development assistance to those facing substantial challenges in developing regions.

In response to these appeals, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier on Friday instituted a broad suspension of most foreign aid grants from the State Department, effective immediately for a 90-day period.
