UN Chief Calls for Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon to Ensure Peace

In a significant development towards regional stability, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory. Speaking at a press conference in Beirut, which marked the conclusion of his two-day visit to Lebanon, Guterres emphasized the necessity of adhering to the agreed timeframe for this withdrawal.

Guterres stated, \"It is now essential to see the withdrawal of the Israel Defense forces from Lebanese territory and the simultaneous deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces across southern Lebanon in the agreed timeframe.\" He underscored the importance of respecting Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, asserting that the Lebanese state must maintain full control over weapons throughout its territory.

The Secretary-General highlighted the critical role of implementing UN Resolution 1701 in all its aspects. \"The United Nations – including through the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon and UNIFIL – is committed to supporting the parties uphold their obligations under Resolution 1701 and ensuring that the cessation of hostilities holds,\" Guterres explained. He further noted that this commitment would pave the way for the full implementation of the resolution and its ultimate goal: establishing a permanent ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.

This call to action comes at a crucial time for Lebanon and the surrounding region, as international efforts continue to foster peace and stability. The successful withdrawal and deployment of forces as outlined in Resolution 1701 are seen as pivotal steps towards achieving long-term peace and preventing further conflict.
