A South Korean court has extended the detention period for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol to up to 20 days following his failed attempt to impose martial law. The court's decision, announced early Sunday morning, allows for Yoon's arrest period to include both the initial 10 days with the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and subsequent 10 days of prosecution interrogation.
Shortly after the announcement, large crowds of Yoon's supporters gathered at the Seoul Western District Court, overwhelming riot police. Protesters were seen using fire extinguishers against police lines and forcing their way into the building, causing significant property damage. Police managed to restore order after a few hours, arresting 46 individuals involved in the unrest and treating around 40 minor injuries.
Yoon, who made history as South Korea's first sitting president to be arrested, was initially detained at the presidential residence on Wednesday. The ongoing investigation focuses on insurrection charges related to his martial law actions.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police have pledged to continue pursuing those responsible for the illegal acts and disturbances during the protests.
