South Korea’s First Sitting President Arrested Over Martial Law

In a historic turn of events, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was arrested on Wednesday at the presidential residence, marking the first time a sitting president has been detained in the country. The arrest occurred at 10:33 a.m. local time (0133 GMT) by a joint investigation unit comprising the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), the National Office of Investigation (NOI), and the defense ministry's investigative headquarters.

TV footage captured the moment Yoon was escorted from the central Seoul residence to the CIO office in Gwacheon, located just south of Seoul. From there, he was transferred to the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, a mere 5 kilometers away.

The CIO is now tasked with deciding within the next 48 hours whether to seek a separate warrant to detain Yoon for up to 20 days for further questioning or to release him. This unprecedented move stems from Yoon's brief and controversial imposition of martial law, which has sparked significant debate and scrutiny within the nation.

Yoon Suk-yeol's arrest is set to have profound implications on South Korea's political landscape, raising questions about governance, accountability, and the future direction of the country's leadership.
