In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, South Korean investigators made another attempt to arrest the impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol at the presidential residence, as captured in TV footage.
Officers from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and the National Office of Investigation breached the second cordon of buses by scaling ladders, pushing past initial security measures.
For over two hours, the investigators faced resistance from Yoon's supporters, members of the ruling People Power Party, and Yoon's defense team at the main gate of the presidential residence. This follow-up comes after an earlier unsuccessful attempt to apprehend Yoon earlier in the month.
Local media reports highlighted a \"physical clash\" between the investigators and the security personnel. The police issued warnings that any further resistance could result in arrests.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok confirmed the ongoing efforts, stating, \"The execution of the presidential arrest warrant has begun.\"
Yoon's lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, took to Facebook to indicate that negotiations were in progress for Yoon to voluntarily appear, citing the \"risk of a serious situation\" arising from rival factions.
However, according to Yonhap News Agency, investigators were determined to proceed with the arrest warrant and did not entertain the lawyers' request for a voluntary meeting.
