The Danish government has reached out to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for a phone conversation following his controversial remarks about Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced in a press conference that no official response has been received yet.
During a prior meeting, all party leaders in Folketing, the Danish Parliament, were briefed on the ongoing diplomatic efforts. This comes after Trump hinted at the possibility of military measures to gain control over Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory.
Frederiksen expressed confidence that Trump would not act on his statements, while Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen advised taking Trump’s comments seriously, but not literally.
The Prime Minister also disclosed that informal dialogues with the incoming U.S. administration have been underway since Trump's election victory in November, with hopes for more substantial talks after his official inauguration.
However, the briefing sparked dissatisfaction among Danish political parties. The Danish People's Party is demanding clearer policies regarding Greenland's autonomy, and the left-wing Red-Green Alliance criticized the government's approach as too lenient towards the United States.
