South Korea's constitutional court announced on Monday that it will proceed with the first pretrial hearing for President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment as scheduled on December 27.
A court official revealed during a televised press conference that the impeachment notice was effectively delivered to Yoon on December 20, despite his repeated refusals to accept the documents. This notice calls for Yoon to submit his written responses to the court by the upcoming Friday.
The presidential security service had initially declined to receive the impeachment-related documents, including the court appearance request and the pretrial hearing schedule. However, the court has confirmed that the delivery was valid, allowing the impeachment process to move forward.
The National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against Yoon on December 14, handing it over to the constitutional court for deliberation within a 180-day period. During this time, Yoon's presidential powers are suspended.
President Yoon faces rebellion charges following his declaration of martial law on the night of December 3, a move that was swiftly overturned by the National Assembly hours later.
