S. Korea Parliament Advances Yoon’s Impeachment Vote by an Hour

South Korea's National Assembly on Friday has moved up the scheduled time to vote on the second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol by one hour. According to multiple media outlets, 300 lawmakers will cast secret ballots at 4 p.m. local time Saturday (0700 GMT), an hour earlier than originally planned.

The motion to impeach President Yoon was submitted by the Democratic Party, the main liberal opposition party, along with five other minor parties on Thursday. The impeachment process, as outlined by the South Korean constitution, requires initiation by a majority of lawmakers and approval by at least two-thirds of the National Assembly legislators.

To pass the motion, the opposition bloc will need eight votes from the 108 ruling party lawmakers. President Yoon faces charges of insurrection related to his declaration of an emergency martial law on the night of December 3, which was subsequently revoked by the National Assembly hours later.
