A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on treason charges. According to reports from multiple media outlets on Wednesday morning, Kim allegedly proposed a martial law declaration to President Yoon Suk-yeol last week, an act deemed treasonous.
The Seoul Central District Court approved the prosecution's request to arrest Kim, citing concerns that he might destroy evidence related to the case.
Kim is accused of engaging in an important mission during the insurrection, which was sparked by President Yoon's emergency martial law declaration on the night of December 3. This declaration was rescinded by the National Assembly just hours later.
The former defense chief opted to waive a court hearing to review the arrest warrant. Prosecutors during the process reportedly referred to President Yoon as a \"ringleader\" of the \"rebellion\".
If found guilty of treason, Kim could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty.
