Illegal Entries and Item Seizures Surge at US-Canada Border in 2024

The US-Canada border has seen a significant uptick in the confiscation of illegal items and inadmissible entries in 2024, according to recent reports.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) highlighted a rise in the seizure of dangerous drugs, firearms, and stolen vehicles during the first ten months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, agents intercepted 2,070 stolen vehicles before they could be shipped abroad, marking an increase of nearly 500 vehicles from last year.

In addition to the rise in illegal item seizures, there has been a substantial increase in the number of inadmissible foreign nationals attempting to enter Canada from the United States. The CBSA reported that nearly 34,000 individuals were turned away, which is approximately 30 percent higher than the 25,500 inadmissible entries recorded in the same timeframe in 2023.

Furthermore, the agency removed over 14,000 foreign nationals from Canada between New Year's Day and Halloween this year due to violations of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

These developments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by border authorities in managing and securing the US-Canada border amidst rising attempts to smuggle illegal items and gain unauthorized entry.
