New York City police are on a global hunt for the suspect who fatally shot UnitedHealth’s CEO Brian Thomson, 50, on Wednesday. The attack, described as a targeted assassination, saw Thomson shot in the back before the gunman fled the scene.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, new video footage suggests the suspect has left the city. After the shooting, the perpetrator escaped on an electric bicycle, disappeared into Central Park, and was later captured entering a taxi that took him to the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that the lack of video footage exiting the bus terminal leads authorities to believe the suspect may have boarded an interstate bus, potentially leaving New York City. This marks a significant development as the critical 48-hour window for capturing the gunman has passed.
Felipe Rodriguez, a former NYPD detective and adjunct professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, emphasized the urgency of the situation. \"The clock is running,\" Rodriguez stated, highlighting that essential pieces of evidence, such as the gun, bicycle, and backpack, remain unrecovered. He likened solving the case to assembling a jigsaw puzzle without all the necessary pieces.
Despite these challenges, authorities continue to advance the investigation, urging the public to assist in bringing the suspect to justice.
