South Korea’s Ruling Party Chief Pledges to Thwart President Yoon’s Impeachment

Han Dong-hoon, the chief of South Korea's ruling People Power Party, has vowed to block the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol, which is being driven by opposition parties. Speaking at the party's supreme council meeting on Thursday, Han emphasized his commitment to preventing the motion from passing in the parliament, aiming to protect the party's supporters from potential harm caused by what he described as an unprepared impeachment effort.

The parliament is scheduled to vote on the impeachment motion this Saturday, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency. Han clarified that his actions are not an attempt to defend President Yoon's unconstitutional declaration of martial law. Instead, he asserted that those responsible for the declaration and the resulting anxiety should be held accountable.

Reflecting on his meeting with President Yoon the previous day, Han criticized the president for attributing responsibility for the martial law declaration to what he termed the "tyranny" of the main liberal opposition Democratic Party. He expressed difficulty sympathizing with the president's perspective and called on Yoon to reconsider his affiliation with the conservative party, arguing that the opposition's actions do not justify the unconstitutional and illegal martial law order.

The Democratic Party, along with five minor parties, submitted the impeachment motion against Yoon on Wednesday. This follows President Yoon's declaration of emergency martial law on Tuesday night, which was quickly repealed early Wednesday after the parliament voted against it.
