At least 30 people are feared dead after devastating landslides struck Masugu village in eastern Uganda, according to local officials. Bulambuli district commissioner Faheera Mpalanyi shared that six bodies, including that of a baby, have been recovered so far.
\"We lost about 30 people,\" Mpalanyi told AFP. She added, \"Given the devastation and the size of the area affected, several people are missing and probably buried in the debris.\" The situation remains dire as rescue teams continue their efforts amidst challenging conditions.
The Ugandan prime minister's office has reported that up to 20 homes may have been swept away by the catastrophic events. A disaster alert was issued on X, highlighting that heavy rains on Wednesday have led to severe disaster situations across multiple regions.
Recent days have seen Uganda grappling with relentless heavy rains, which have also caused significant flooding in the northwest. A tributary of the Nile River burst its banks, forcing emergency teams to mobilize swiftly to rescue stranded motorists and provide aid to affected communities.
As Uganda faces these natural calamities, the resilience and solidarity of its people are being put to the test. Support from international communities and effective disaster management strategies will be crucial in mitigating the impact and aiding recovery efforts.
