The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has raised alarms over nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZNPP). IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that safety remains \"in jeopardy\" after the facility recently lost connection to its only remaining 750 kilovolt (kV) power line twice within a few days.
The first disruption occurred due to unspecified damage approximately 17 kilometers from the ZNPP, resulting in a power outage that lasted over 30 hours from Saturday morning until repairs were completed by Sunday noon. Despite these efforts, the plant faced another power loss on Thursday morning.
With the main 750 kV line compromised, the ZNPP had to rely solely on its 330 kV backup power line to maintain essential functions such as reactor cooling and other critical safety operations. Prior to the conflict, the plant was equipped with four 750 kV and six 330 kV lines, ensuring robust power redundancy.
Grossi emphasized the importance of stable power connections for nuclear safety, highlighting the potential risks if alternative power sources fail. The IAEA continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for measures to enhance the plant's resilience against power disruptions.
