The World Food Program (WFP), a leading UN agency dedicated to combating hunger worldwide, has urgently called for the safe passage of food aid to Sudan's North Darfur and South Kordofan states. This appeal comes at a critical time as famine has been confirmed in Zamzam, North Darfur, and Kadugli, South Kordofan.
In a recent announcement on the social media platform X, WFP stated, \"For the first time in months, there are multiple WFP convoys of food aid heading to Zamzam in North Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan. We have the food, we have the trucks, and we have the staff on board to ensure this aid gets there. Now, we need all warring parties and armed groups to allow this vital food and nutrition to arrive safely.\"
Adding to the efforts, the Sudanese government has extended the opening of the Adre border crossing with Chad for an additional three months. This extension aims to facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the war-affected population.
The situation remains dire, with the government reporting that 28.9 million people in Sudan require humanitarian assistance due to the ongoing civil war. Out of these, 16.9 million are in urgent need of life-saving aid. Over the next two months, approximately 840,000 metric tonnes of assistance will be necessary to address the escalating crisis.
The Adre land border crossing had been closed since February following accusations that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were using it to transport weapons. The recent extension is a pivotal move towards ensuring that essential resources reach those most in need.
