Over Half of Canada’s Human Trafficking Cases Remain Unsolved

Human trafficking is a persistent and growing issue in Canada, with more than half of reported cases remaining unresolved. According to Statistics Canada, the number of human trafficking incidents has been on the rise since 2013, with a significant increase observed between 2018 and 2019.

From 2013 to 2023, police services reported over 4,500 incidents of human trafficking, averaging an annual rate of 1.1 incidents per 100,000 population. Despite efforts to combat this crime, 58 percent of these cases have not been solved. Factors contributing to the high unsolved rate include ongoing investigations, insufficient evidence, and the absence of identified suspects.

The majority of victims are women and girls, with approximately one-quarter being children and youth under the age of 18. This alarming statistic underscores the vulnerability of these groups and the urgent need for more effective measures to protect them.

Statistics Canada emphasizes that official numbers only scratch the surface of the true extent of human trafficking in the country, given its hidden and often underreported nature. This calls for increased awareness, better reporting mechanisms, and stronger support systems for victims to address and mitigate this critical social issue.
