In a significant move on Monday, Israel's parliament passed a law to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating within the country. This decision raises concerns among Israel's Western allies about the potential worsening of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Israeli officials justified the ban by highlighting the involvement of a few UNRWA staff members in the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel and their alleged affiliations with Hamas and other armed groups. Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, condemned the vote, stating that it opposes the UN charter and violates international law.
Simultaneously, Israeli tanks advanced deeper into northern Gaza in efforts to eliminate regrouping Hamas militants. The Palestinian Civil Emergency Service reported that around 100,000 residents are trapped in areas like Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun without access to medical or food supplies.
Amid the escalating conflict, ceasefire negotiations led by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have resumed. Egypt's president proposed a two-day truce to facilitate the exchange of four Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners, followed by discussions on a permanent ceasefire within ten days.
The conflict has also spurred wider tensions in the Middle East, with Israeli strikes targeting Lebanon and Iranian missile production sites. Iran has vowed to respond to Israeli actions, further complicating the regional dynamics.
