Iraq's Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani declared a significant victory in the fight against terrorism on Tuesday. In a strategic operation carried out by the Counter-Terrorism and National Security Services, the commander of the Islamic State (IS) group for Iraq and eight other senior leaders were killed in the Hamrin mountain range.
Al-Sudani took to the social media platform X to highlight the success of the mission, stating, \"There is no place for terrorists in Iraq, and we will pursue and eliminate them until the land of Iraq is cleansed of terrorists and their evil deeds.\"
The Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command, provided further details, revealing that the operation was based on intelligence reports and months of monitoring. Nine terrorists were killed, including Jasim al-Mazrouei, known as Abu Abdul-Qader, the IS group's leader in Iraq.
In addition to eliminating key figures, the operation resulted in the seizure of large quantities of weapons, ammunition, and equipment. Eight hideouts were destroyed, including a major workshop for manufacturing explosive devices.
While the security situation in Iraq has improved since the defeat of IS in 2017, remnants of the group continue to carry out guerrilla attacks in urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, posing ongoing challenges to security forces and civilians.
