China Pushes UN Security Council to Enforce Resolutions on Gaza

China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, emphasized the need to revitalize the effectiveness of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions concerning the ongoing situation in Gaza during a recent briefing.

Addressing the emergency meeting on the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, Fu pointed out that while the Security Council has adopted several resolutions calling for a ceasefire, their implementation has been lacking.

\"None of them has been effectively implemented,\" Fu stated, highlighting the diminished credibility of the UN system as a result.

He reiterated China's support for the Council's use of all available options to ensure that its resolutions are upheld, urging every member state to take responsibility in safeguarding their effectiveness.

Fu specifically called on the United States to heed the international community's call and support further actions by the Council to achieve an immediate ceasefire, questioning the impact of America's substantial military aid to Israel on these objectives.

\"Under the current circumstances, does such a large-scale supply of weapons help realize the objectives of Security Council resolutions? This is a question that needs serious consideration,\" he remarked.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of upholding and revitalizing international humanitarian law, condemning the use of starvation as a weapon of war as a serious war crime. He underscored the vital role of humanitarian organizations in Gaza and condemned any suppression or threats against them.

Fu urged Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law by lifting the blockade and restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza, and to cooperate fully with the United Nations and other humanitarian entities to ensure the safety of operations such as the transportation of supplies and vaccination programs.

He reaffirmed China's support for UNRWA, the UN relief agency for Palestinians, calling for its protection and opposing any attempts to smear or suppress the agency.
