China Advocates Dialogue as Key to Resolving Yemen Crisis at UN Security Council

At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting, a senior Chinese diplomat emphasized that dialogue and consultations are the \"only correct choice\" to resolve the ongoing Yemen crisis.

Geng Shuang, the deputy permanent representative of the Chinese mainland to the UN, urged the Houthi forces to respect the navigation rights of merchant ships from all nations in the Red Sea, in accordance with international law. He highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of shipping lanes in this strategic region.

Addressing the broader tensions in the Red Sea, Geng noted that continued unrest does not serve the common interests of the international community. He called on all parties involved to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions further.

Regarding the situations in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the ongoing strikes between Houthi forces and Israel, Geng stressed that the top priority should be to de-escalate the situation and prevent the conflict from expanding.

China advocates for all parties to adhere to the general direction of a political settlement, resolving differences through dialogue and consultation. Geng emphasized the need to advance a Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned comprehensive political process, supporting the work of the UN's special envoy for Yemen and pushing for substantive steps towards a political resolution at the earliest possible date.

The Chinese diplomat also called on the international community to increase humanitarian aid and development assistance for Yemen. He urged increased support for the Yemeni government's efforts to improve the livelihoods of its people and expressed grave concern over the detention of UN personnel in Yemen, encouraging all parties to facilitate their unconditional release promptly.
