In a strong statement addressing the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for an immediate, complete, and permanent ceasefire. Wang emphasized the urgent need for the release of all hostages and the unimpeded access of humanitarian aid to the region.
During a telephone conversation with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the deep concerns of the international community regarding the prolonged escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
Wang stressed that all lives are equally precious, irrespective of nationality or ethnicity, and that the humanitarian disaster in Gaza must come to an end. He argued that responding to violence with more violence does not address the legitimate concerns of all parties involved.
Pointing out that the conflict has underscored the enduring significance of the Palestinian question in the Middle East, Wang called for a return to the political path of a two-state solution. He believes this approach would enable the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine and foster harmonious relations between Jewish and Arab communities, ultimately achieving stability and lasting security in the region.
Wang also expressed China's concern over the rising tensions between Israel and Iran, asserting that renewed conflict would serve no one's interests. He urged all parties to proceed with caution to avoid falling into a vicious cycle of violence. Emphasizing that China is not driven by self-interest in the Middle East, Wang reiterated that China does not engage in geopolitical contests.
As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China has consistently advocated for peace, international law, and truth. Wang affirmed China's commitment to playing a constructive role in de-escalating tensions and restoring peace in the Middle East.
Wang highlighted the importance of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and called on the Israeli side to take concrete measures to ensure the safety of UNIFIL personnel.
In their discussion, both sides exchanged views on China-Israel relations. Katz affirmed that developing relations with China is a policy in Israel that serves the common interests of both countries and noted that the Israeli government maintains its consistent position on the Taiwan question.
Wang assured that China maintains continuity and stability in its policy toward Israel and expressed willingness to resume exchanges across all aspects once the situation eases. He also emphasized the promotion of sustainable development in the innovative comprehensive partnership between the two nations.
Concluding the conversation, Wang expressed hope that the Israeli side would implement effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese institutions and nationals in Israel.
