The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry has charged Israel with deliberately targeting healthcare facilities in Gaza, labeling these actions as \"crimes against humanity.\"
In a statement released Thursday, the three-person commission accused Israel of a \"concerted policy to destroy Gaza's healthcare system as part of a broader assault on Gaza.\" The report further states that Israel is \"committing war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination with relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities.\"
Established by the UN Human Rights Council in May 2021, the commission aims to investigate alleged violations of international law in Israel and the Palestinian territories. This marks the publication of its second report since the October 7 attack by Hamas, which ignited the current conflict.
The report also condemns the mistreatment of Palestinian detainees in Israel and hostages in Gaza, accusing both Israel and Palestinian armed groups of engaging in \"torture\" and sexual and gender-based violence.
In response, Israel has dismissed the commission's findings as \"systematic anti-Israeli discrimination\" and has rejected the conclusions of its June report, which similarly accused Israel of committing crimes against humanity, including the \"extermination\" of Gaza.
