Earlier this month, from December 14 to 21, Kathmandu hosted the 2025 Himalayan Rim Regional Film Exhibition, where filmmakers from the Chinese mainland showcased a fusion of traditional culture and modern digital technology to young Nepalese students.
Organizers designed the event to bridge cultural exchange across the Himalayan region. Screenings featured a range of animated films that drew on classic Chinese stories, while hands-on workshops offered practical sessions in digital editing and animation techniques.
"This exhibition gave local artists and film lovers a valuable chance to connect with the Chinese mainland film industry," said Kundan Aryal, head of the Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tribhuvan University. "The screenings and workshops were both inspiring and memorable, showing how tradition can evolve through innovation."
Participants praised the interactive format. Many students explored digital software for storytelling and animation, building on folkloric themes to imagine new creative projects that blend history and technology.
As the exhibition wrapped up, attendees left with fresh inspiration and a greater appreciation for how digital innovation can preserve and reimagine cultural heritage. The event underscored growing ties between the Chinese mainland and its Himalayan neighbors through the universal language of film.
