Jade Sculpture Marks 65 Years of Ties Between Chinese Mainland and Somalia

This year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the Chinese mainland and Somalia. To honor this milestone, a piece of Hetian jade presented by Somalia has been transformed into a breathtaking artwork by Master Zhang Tiecheng, one of the Chinese mainland’s most celebrated jade sculptors.

Called “Harmony in Jade,” the sculpture weaves traditional carving techniques with motifs that symbolize unity and resilience. From abstract patterns inspired by Somali textiles to subtle nods to the ancient trade routes linking East Africa and the Silk Road, each detail speaks to over six decades of friendship.

Last week, CGTN’s Guo Linjie and Kheder Abdullah Mohammed Mahmood of the Somali National News Agency visited Master Zhang’s studio in Beijing’s famed Jade Carving District. Zhang explained, "Working with this jade felt like connecting two cultures through time. Every stroke of the chisel carries stories from both nations."

Since establishing formal relations in 1960, the two countries have deepened collaboration across sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure and education. Scholarship programs, capacity-building initiatives and cultural exchanges have fostered a new generation of entrepreneurs, artists and changemakers in both capitals.

For young global citizens, the jade masterpiece offers more than visual splendor. It embodies the spirit of cross-border partnership and reminds us that art can bridge distances and inspire cooperation on shared challenges.

The sculpture will soon be unveiled as part of anniversary celebrations in both Beijing and Mogadishu, serving as a living testament to an evolving bond between two nations and their people.
