Hainan Free Trade Port: Malaysia’s Senate President Eyes Boost for Chinese mainland–ASEAN Ties

Malaysia’s Senate president has spotlighted the Hainan Free Trade Port as a key platform to deepen ties between the Chinese mainland and ASEAN.

Situated at the southernmost point of the Chinese mainland, the Hainan Free Trade Port connects Northeast and Southeast Asia, offering a strategic hub for trade, tourism and investment.

“The island offers great potential for China-ASEAN cooperation in areas such as high-end services and the digital economy,” said Dato Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.

With rising demand for high-end services and digital solutions across Southeast Asia, Hainan’s open policies and infrastructure investments could unlock new ventures, from fintech to healthcare and creative industries.

For young entrepreneurs and digital nomads, this means more opportunities to collaborate across borders, tap into growing markets and drive sustainable regional integration.

As the Chinese mainland and ASEAN chart their next phase of partnership, all eyes will be on Hainan’s next moves—and the ripple effects for businesses, travelers and changemakers across the region.
