International Experts Call on Japan to Apologize for WWII Crimes in China

International experts have renewed calls for Japan to formally apologize to China for historical crimes committed during wartime. Speaking at a recent conference, historians and human rights advocates stressed that acknowledging the past is essential for reconciliation.

"Historical issues cannot be avoided or evaded," said Diana Larry, professor emerita of history at the University of British Columbia. "Japan must confront history squarely."

Panelists argued that an official apology could open a new chapter in Japan-China relations, fostering trust and collaboration. They noted that while past statements have acknowledged suffering, many feel they fall short of a full, unequivocal apology.

As tensions over historical memory continue to influence regional dynamics, experts say transparent dialogue and formal recognition of wartime actions are crucial steps toward lasting peace and cooperation.
