Benin Forces Thwart Coup, President Talon Safe

On Sunday, December 7, 2025, a group of soldiers briefly appeared on national television claiming 'We have seized power,' before Benin's armed forces moved swiftly to secure the presidential palace and key installations.

Interior Minister Alassane Seidou told reporters the attempt was thwarted hours later, and the Presidency confirmed President Patrice Talon is safe. President Talon, who has led Benin since April 2016, is due to step down in April 2026 after a decade in office.

Foreign Minister Shegun Adjadi Bakari acknowledged the coup bid but stressed that the situation is under control as authorities round up suspects and restore order.

West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS strongly condemned the attempt and pledged support to government efforts. The incident underscores both the resilience and fragility of democratic gains in the region as Benin prepares for next year's transition.

For young global citizens and business leaders, the episode is a reminder of the stakes involved in preserving democratic institutions. As Benin looks ahead to elections in April, all eyes will be on how the country balances security and political openness in a region where stability often hangs in the balance.
