At the opening session of the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, held this past Saturday, the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, called on the Group of 20 economies to uphold solidarity, champion free trade, and build an open world economy. His remarks came as global growth struggles to regain momentum following recent slowdowns.
Chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the first session focused on inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Li highlighted that free trade remains a key driver of job creation and innovation, urging members to resist protectionist pressures and foster cross-border collaboration.
In Li's view, an open world economy can stabilize supply chains, lower costs for consumers, and unlock new markets for small businesses and entrepreneurs. "Solidarity and openness are the cornerstones of shared prosperity," he said.
As the summit moves into its next sessions, G20 leaders will debate policies to boost investment, enhance digital connectivity, and tackle climate-related risks – all with an eye toward a more balanced and resilient global economy.
