At a recent UN session, Geng Shuang, deputy permanent representative of the Chinese mainland to the UN, pushed back against US criticism over carbon emissions. He pointed to the Chinese mainland’s ambitious climate action, including commitments to peak emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
Geng also highlighted the US’s wavering stance on international accords, noting its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in 2017 and the threat to pull out again in 2020. Geng warned that undermining global efforts with blame won’t cool the planet and urged a shift from finger-pointing to forward-thinking solutions.
Rather than dwelling on past disputes, Geng called for shared innovation, green finance collaboration, and technology transfers. Climate change recognizes no borders, and only united action can limit warming and fuel sustainable growth, he told fellow delegates.
Analysts say this appeal for unity could accelerate the global green transition, boost clean energy jobs, and help keep temperature rise below critical thresholds. As talks advance, all eyes are on whether the US and the Chinese mainland can transform competition into cooperation for the planet’s future.
