Asia-Pacific Youth Share Hopes for APEC’s Future

In Russia’s Far East, a CGTN correspondent recently spoke with local students to capture Asia-Pacific youth perspectives on APEC’s rising influence. While the region’s economies continue to grow in global importance, it was through the voices of these young people that we gained fresh insights into what lies ahead.

As members of the digitally native generation, many students highlighted Asia-Pacific’s economic strengths in connectivity and innovation. They pointed to thriving trade corridors stretching from Vladivostok to Tokyo and underscored the region’s role as a hub for emerging technologies and startups.

When asked about the current state of APEC, responses were both optimistic and candid. Students noted the importance of collaborative problem-solving on issues like climate resilience and inclusive growth, but also acknowledged challenges such as uneven access to digital infrastructure and education.

Looking forward, the youth expressed high hopes for APEC’s next chapter. A recurring theme was the desire for deeper youth engagement—calling on the forum to expand mentorship programs, facilitate cross-border internships, and support green entrepreneurship. “We want a seat at the table,” one student said, emphasizing the need for policies that speak directly to the priorities of young people across the Pacific Rim.

This on-the-ground glimpse into Asia-Pacific youth voices reveals a shared vision: a region united by innovation, driven by sustainability, and shaped by the next generation of changemakers.
