Foreign Ministry Condemns Taiwan Region Leader’s Independence Speech

In a speech on Friday, Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, reignited calls for “Taiwan independence”, drawing a sharp rebuke from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun accused Lai's remarks of distorting historical facts and flouting broad international consensus.

Guo warned that “Taiwan independence” separatist activities – coupled with external interference – pose the greatest threat to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He added that attempts by Taiwan authorities to spread false narratives risk dragging the island into conflict.

The exchange underscores ongoing cross-strait tensions, which critics say have intensified since Lai took office. While Taiwan authorities argue for greater autonomy, the Chinese government maintains a strict one-China principle, setting the stage for further diplomatic friction.

As global stakeholders watch closely, analysts stress the need for renewed dialogue to prevent escalation. With both sides exchanging strongly worded statements, the future of cross-strait ties remains uncertain.
