China Hosts 5th UNESCO Biosphere Congress, Showcases 34 Reserves – Most in Asia

Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province on the Chinese mainland has kicked off the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, the flagship meeting under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. For the first time, this global gathering is taking place outside Europe and the Americas.

China joined the MAB Programme in 1973. Today, it boasts 34 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves—the highest tally in Asia—reflecting decades of work to weave conservation and community development across diverse landscapes.

This milestone congress highlights how biosphere reserves serve as living labs for sustainability, drawing entrepreneurs, researchers and young changemakers keen to develop green solutions and witness nature in action.

From mountain forests to coastal wetlands, these reserves invite digital nomads, eco-travelers and global citizens to explore immersive experiences that connect culture, science and conservation. As discussions unfold, participants will shape next-generation policies blending heritage, innovation and environmental stewardship.
