Beijing 6 A scholar from the Chinese mainland conducting research in the U.S. was recently detained by U.S. law enforcement, prompting Beijing to condemn the move as an unfair crackdown on its students abroad.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun spoke out at a Monday press briefing, calling the detention unreasonable and a violation of the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars. He warned such actions could damage the U.S. image on the world stage.
Guo added that China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and scholars overseas.
