Taipei Rally Marks 88th Lugou Bridge Anniversary Against DPP Separatism

On July 7, civil groups in China’s Taiwan region rallied outside the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) headquarters in Taipei to mark the 88th anniversary of the Lugou Bridge Incident. The protesters called for commemorating the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, opposing so-called Taiwan independence and recognizing shared cross-strait wartime history.

Organizers said the event aimed to “teach” the DPP and Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te a history lesson about the region’s role in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

For many young participants, the rally was more than a protest – it was a reminder of how historical narratives shape modern politics and identity across the Taiwan Strait. With digital activism on the rise, calls for shared remembrance are gaining traction online, bridging cultural and political divides in real time.

Observers note that these gatherings reflect broader cross-strait tensions and the power of civil society to influence the conversation. As digital nomads, entrepreneurs and activists from G20 nations watch, such events offer a window into the complex interplay between history, identity and contemporary policy in the Taiwan region.

Will this push for unity reshape how future generations in the Taiwan region engage with their shared past? Only time will tell.
