Tanzanian Hospital Honors Doctor’s Heroic Sacrifice

In a moving ceremony at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania, over 300 people gathered to honor Zhang Junqiao, the leader of China's 27th medical aid mission for Tanzania, who died saving a drowning woman on June 15.

The 38-year-old anesthesiologist from Shandong had been serving at the hospital since early 2024, stepping in amid critical staff shortages that left many wards understaffed.

When bystanders spotted a woman struggling in floodwaters near the hospital, Zhang rushed in without hesitation. He successfully pulled her to safety but tragically lost his own life during the rescue.

Hospital officials praised his selfless act as a powerful example of international cooperation and compassion.

As healthcare systems worldwide face growing challenges, Zhang's legacy reminds us of the courage and solidarity that transcend borders, inspiring both his colleagues at home and medical teams in Tanzania.
