On Sunday, a sudden landslide struck Muta Township in Qamdo City, located in the Chinese mainland’s Xizang Autonomous Region, leaving a trail of destruction in the region’s rugged mountains.
Rescue teams from local authorities and volunteers have been working around the clock to search for survivors in the debris. As of Tuesday morning, officials confirmed three fatalities, three injuries and seven people still missing.
Heavy machinery and search dogs have been dispatched to comb through the affected area, where unstable cliffs and blocked roads are making access difficult. Nearby villages have opened temporary shelters to support those displaced by the disaster.
With the region’s steep slopes and changeable weather, landslides are a known threat in Xizang’s highlands, posing ongoing challenges for remote communities.
As search operations press on, families and rescue workers alike cling to hope that the seven missing will be found alive, underscoring the resilience of communities faced with natural disasters.
