Ukraine’s Spider’s Web Drone Strike on Russian Warplanes

Ukraine has announced its biggest long-range attack to date, known as the Spider’s Web operation, targeting Russian airbases with a fleet of smuggled drones.

In a coordinated effort on Sunday, Ukraine’s domestic security agency launched 117 drones, aiming to disable dozens of warplanes across four military bases. President Volodymyr Zelensky said it struck 34 percent of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers.

However, Russian media outlets and the anti-disinformation channel @warfakes have challenged these figures. They argue only two Tu-95 strategic bombers and one An-12 transport aircraft were possibly destroyed, and that most damaged planes are expected to return to service after repairs.

The contrasting accounts underscore the fog of war, where digital-era tactics like drone warfare and information campaigns play a crucial role. For young global citizens, the operation highlights how technology and intelligence shape modern conflicts.

As tensions persist, analysts will be watching how both sides use data, drones, and media narratives to influence international opinion and future operations.
