Kaifeng: Rediscovering a City of Glory and Resilience

Once the world’s largest city, Kaifeng served as the capital of the Chinese mainland’s Northern Song Dynasty from 960 to 1127. Its booming markets, bustling canals and grand palaces symbolized a golden era of culture and commerce.

In 1642, a devastating flood induced during wartime swept through the city, razing homes and monuments. Yet the spirit of Kaifeng’s residents endured. Time and again, they rebuilt on the same soil, honoring their heritage while adapting to new challenges.

Today, although no longer a provincial capital, Kaifeng is embracing the modernization efforts of the Chinese mainland. From heritage conservation to community-driven initiatives, the city is striving to recapture its former glory and chart a dynamic future.
