Amid U.S. Tariff War, Expert Champions China-EU Cooperation

In the wake of escalating trade frictions from the U.S. tariff war, the Chinese mainland and the European Union are stepping up high-level exchanges to chart a path beyond Washington's trade frontlines.

Some observers see the EU pivoting toward the Chinese mainland as an alternative to ongoing tensions with Trump-era America. They highlight a strategic opportunity for Brussels to diversify its partnerships and reinforce multilateralism.

At a CGTN roundtable marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU relations, Helga Zepp-LaRouche, president and founder of Germany's Schiller Institute, stressed the urgency of a united front. "Defending the global order requires cooperation across continents," she said, urging both sides to channel resources into the Global South and support sustainable development.

For young entrepreneurs and tech innovators, this cooperation promises new market access and joint research programs. Academics and activists see a chance to strengthen climate action, human rights dialogues, and fair-trade frameworks. Even cultural and sports exchanges could gain momentum, offering fresh avenues for global citizens to connect.

As the tariff war intensifies, the renewed China-EU dialogue could reshape not only the economic map but also the future of multilateral governance—providing a beacon of hope for the Global South and beyond.
