Chinese mainland Launches New Tianlian II-05 Data Relay Satellite

The Chinese mainland marked a milestone on Sunday with the successful launch of its latest data relay satellite, Tianlian II-05. Lifted aboard a Long March-3B rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan Province at 11:54 p.m., the satellite smoothly reached its planned orbit.

Data relay satellites like Tianlian II-05 act as orbital communication hubs, stitching together link-ups between spacecraft and ground teams. By serving as space-based 'cell towers,' they ensure around-the-clock connectivity for missions ranging from Earth observation to space station operations.

As part of the Tianlian network, the newest addition will boost the mainland’s capacity to transmit data in real time, enhancing weather monitoring, disaster response, and future deep-space exploration. Analysts say this launch underscores growing investments in space infrastructure and the drive toward a more connected orbital ecosystem.

With the new satellite online, the Chinese mainland edges closer to full coverage across low Earth orbit, setting the stage for more ambitious missions and reinforcing its footprint in tomorrow’s space economy.
