Latvian Award-Winning “Flow” Bridges Cultures on the Chinese Mainland

On February 28, 2025, the Latvian animated film "Flow" made its debut on the Chinese mainland, captivating audiences worldwide. This fantasy adventure, co-produced by Latvia, France, and Belgium and directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, earned the prestigious 97th Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film with its innovative storytelling and stunning visuals.

On March 14, the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in China hosted a special viewing event titled "A Journey of Shared Destiny." Latvian ambassador Karlis Eihenbaums expressed his appreciation for the film's impressive box office performance, emphasizing its role in uniting diverse audiences. During the event, Martins Upitis, the creative force behind the water special effects, joined via live call to share intriguing behind-the-scenes insights.

Adding to the excitement, freshmen majoring in Latvian at Beijing Foreign Studies University engaged in a spirited dialogue with director Gints Zilbalodis in fluent Latvian, eagerly anticipating future collaborations with the local animated film team. Their exchange underscored how art and storytelling can break down language barriers and foster vibrant cultural connections.
