China's National People's Congress (NPC) deputies are actively countering the Western perception that the NPC serves merely as a 'rubber stamp' for government decisions. Highlighting their year-round efforts, they emphasize the significant legislative work accomplished over the past year.
Last year, the State Council departments managed an impressive 8,783 NPC proposals and 4,813 Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) motions, resolving over 95 percent of the total in a timely manner. Out of these, more than 5,000 suggestions were adopted, resulting in the creation of 2,000 new policies.
NPC deputies argue that these figures demonstrate a proactive and responsive legislative body that actively participates in shaping China's governance and policy-making processes. By addressing and incorporating a vast array of proposals, the NPC underscores its commitment to effective democracy and meaningful political discourse, challenging the notion of it being a mere ceremonial entity.
