As China's Two Sessions – a top yearly political event – unfolds, the nation is ramping up efforts to develop homegrown talent. Leading the charge is Fields medalist Professor Shing-Tung Yau, who anticipates a surge in China's world-class math students over the next five years.
Yau and his team are spearheading China's bid to host the 2030 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2030), with the goal of inspiring young students to take the lead in global math research. He highlighted that, unlike in Japan and the UK, a significant number of Chinese students exhibit a strong passion for mathematics.
This enthusiasm, coupled with the country's growing investment in basic science, is paying off and fostering a new generation of mathematicians poised to make impactful contributions to the field worldwide.
