Rare Chinese Goral Mother and Cub Caught on Camera in Hubei

An infrared camera in Hubei's Duheyuan National Nature Reserve captured a rare and tender moment between a Chinese goral mother and her cub, sparking excitement among conservationists. The footage shows the vigilant mother foraging while her curious cub explores rocky terrain—a glimpse into the secret lives of these elusive mountain dwellers.

Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, Chinese gorals face habitat challenges despite their agility in steep landscapes. Fewer than 10,000 mature individuals remain in the wild, with Hubei's nature reserves playing a critical role in protecting the species through 24/7 monitoring systems.

\"This sighting confirms our conservation strategies are working,\" said a reserve spokesperson, noting that infrared cameras have documented 11 gorals in the area since 2022. The species' survival is seen as a key indicator of ecosystem health in central China.
