Beijing has reached a remarkable milestone in its fight against air pollution, recording a record-breaking 290 days of good air quality in 2024. This achievement marks the highest level of clean air since monitoring began, demonstrating significant progress in environmental management.
According to the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, 79.2% of days in 2024 enjoyed good air quality. This represents an increase of 19 days compared to the previous year and a staggering rise of 114 days since 2013.
Moreover, the number of days with heavy air pollution has plummeted from 58 days in 2013 to just two days in 2024, a decrease of 96.6%. This dramatic improvement underscores the effectiveness of the measures taken to combat air pollution.
Beijing's success extends beyond its city boundaries. The city has actively coordinated air pollution control efforts with surrounding regions, including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. Through collaborative planning, unified standards, joint emergency responses, and information sharing, the region has seen significant enhancements in air quality. The annual average PM2.5 concentrations across these areas have decreased notably over the past decade, contributing to a healthier environment for residents.
This achievement reflects Beijing's commitment to sustainable urban development and sets a positive example for other major cities worldwide grappling with air quality challenges.
