Typhoon Kong-rey, the 21st typhoon of the year, made landfall in southeastern Taitung County of China's Taiwan region at around 2 p.m. on Thursday. The powerful storm has tragically resulted in three deaths and left dozens injured.
The eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung faced strong winds and torrential rain throughout the day. In response to the severe weather conditions, work and school have been suspended across the island to ensure public safety.
Travel across the Taiwan region has been significantly disrupted, with most trains, flights, and ferries canceled. Commuters and travelers are advised to stay informed and exercise caution.
According to the National Meteorological Center, Kong-rey is gradually shifting northeast toward Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in China, where it could make landfall along the coasts. In anticipation, several coastal provinces in China have activated emergency response measures, including mass evacuations and the suspension of train and ferry services.
